The Power of Words: A Lesson in Kindness and Inclusivity

Children’s House One students recently engaged in a meaningful social-emotional lesson about the lasting impact of words. A key theme throughout the year is kindness and inclusivity, and one particular lesson brings this concept to life in a powerful way.
Students began by reading The Day You Begin and Rainbow Fish, stories that emphasize empathy and the importance of inclusion. Following the reading, they were introduced to “River,” a paper doll used to illustrate how words and actions affect others. Each time an example of an unkind or exclusionary remark is shared, a part of River is crumpled. By the end, River becomes a tiny, squished ball.
To reinforce the power of kindness, students then practiced using inclusive and supportive language. With each kind word, River was carefully uncrumpled, showing how positive words can help heal. However, River’s paper remained wrinkled—a powerful visual reminder that even after apologies, our words leave lasting marks.
This lesson sparked thoughtful reflection among students, helping them understand the importance of speaking with kindness and considering how their words affect others. Many children continue to reference “River” and the idea of “giving wrinkles” as they navigate their social interactions, carrying this lesson beyond the classroom.
Through activities like this, Inly fosters a culture of empathy, respect, and inclusion, empowering students to be mindful of the impact they have on others.
