The Art of Flower Arranging
October 19th 2022
Practical Life lessons bridge the home-school environment and fulfill a child’s intrinsic desire to imitate the grown-ups in their lives. Flower arranging is just one of these lessons incorporated into the Montessori toddler and preschool classroom.
- Flower arranging is a multi-step process for children:
- Go to the sink to get water
- Fill up the vase (this may take one or more trips to the sink)
- Trim the flowers with scissors (sometimes!)
- Arrange the flowers in the vase
- Pick a spot in the classroom to place their arrangement.
In addition to developing a sense of beauty, the flower-arranging activity allows students to practice decision-making, improve their coordination, and understand symmetry.
