Alumni Q&A: Sam Benning ’18
Alumni Appreciation Week
What have you been doing since you left Inly?
After graduating Inly, I attended Scituate High School and immersed myself in the culture of Scituate and the world around me. I took on many leadership roles at SHS, including Vice President of my class and Vice President of the National Honor Society. I was also a captain of the three-time league-champion golf team and one-time league-champion basketball team.
I am now a sophomore at the University of Maryland pursuing a double degree in Operations Management + Business Analytics and Statistics. I continue to enjoy leadership roles and am active in the UMD Sports Business Society, where I plan a school-wide basketball tournament to raise funds for SOUL (Student-athletes Organized to Understand Leadership). I am also co-host and producer of the Society’s Locker Room Podcast.
How has Inly shaped or inspired you as a learner?
Inly helped drive my love for problem-solving, something that I still hold today. I love working with analytics and numbers and spend much of my free time sifting through sports websites, looking at statistics/percentages and how they fit into general trends.
Inly also helped me become a great leader. By building strong relationships with adults at Inly, I developed confidence in myself and a commitment to lead others. Putting us in uncomfortable situations built character, and it certainly increased my confidence when around my peers today.
What lesson or memory do you carry forward from Inly in your life?
I remember that Inly always let the student guide their own learning path and allowed them to take their passions as far as they would like. I was very interested in mathematics, and the school helped me go above and beyond when it came to exploring the subject. They were always prepared to help students go as far as they could.
