Alumni Q&A: Jenna McKenney ’10
Alumni Appreciation Week
What was your life trajectory beyond Inly?
After graduating Inly middle school in 2010, I attended Notre Dame Academy for high school. I subsequently attended Harvard University, where I majored in economics with a secondary in neuroscience. I am currently enrolled in graduate school at Northwestern University, where I am in the dual MD/MBA program. I have completed three years of medical school thus far. This year, I am working towards my MBA at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. I will graduate with my medical and business degrees next year and, afterward, plan to pursue a residency in anesthesiology.
What is currently exciting you most in your life/work?
Currently, I am excited that I am able to pursue my MBA this year and begin integrating my interests in medicine and business. It’s exciting to learn of so many career opportunities that unite these two interests – for example, hospital administration and healthcare investing. While I love being in school, I am excited that next year I will be entering the workforce when I begin my anesthesiology residency. It will be exciting to dedicate myself full-time to my specialization within medicine.
How do you think Inly shaped or inspired you as a learner?
Inly inspired me to be a self-directed and creative learner. The open classroom structure and encouraging teachers at Inly inspired me to delve deeper into topics I was interested in and take creative risks. The love of learning that was instilled in me at Inly has shaped me throughout my life. In my education beyond Inly, I have had the confidence to pursue subjects that were interesting to me and shape a unique career path. Additionally, the experiential learning and extracurricular activities at Inly enabled me to develop skills beyond what is traditionally taught in the classroom. For example, by participating in school plays, leading morning meetings, and giving my eighth-grade graduation speech I gained confidence in leadership and public speaking skills.
What piece of advice do you have for Inly students?
My advice to Inly students would be to take full advantage of the unique opportunities at Inly. Fully participate in internships, school plays, and experiential learning. These experiences are some of my most treasured memories and helped me to grow into a confident and creative individual. Also, explore learning about things you are passionate about – Inly offers the unique opportunity to engage in self-directed learning. Take this time to develop new skills, learn new things, and explore. Finally, cherish the friendships you make at Inly. To this day, my best friends are classmates I met at Inly!
